3-Step Aluminum Polishing Process
Step 1 — Cutting
Mount the Orange Airway Buffing Wheel and pair it with the T121 Fast-Cut Compound Bar. This is the aggressive cutting stage designed to remove oxidation, tarnishing, and surface imperfections.
Recommended speed: approximately 3,000 RPM.
Step 2 — Coloring & Refining
Switch to the Yellow Airway Buffing Wheel and use the True Green Coloring Compound Bar. This stage refines the surface created during the cutting process while adding additional luster and clarity.
Recommended speed: approximately 2,500 RPM.
Step 3 — Final Polish
Finish with the Flannel Airway Buffing Wheel paired with the Competition Purple Finishing Compound Bar. This final stage is designed to bring out a brilliant, mirror-like shine in polished aluminum.
Recommended speed: 1,800 RPM or below.
How to Use
Before polishing, make sure your buffing wheel is properly mounted and securely fastened to your bench grinder or angle grinder.
Safety flanges should always be used when mounting a buffing wheel. They help keep the wheel securely in place while reducing the possibility of the center plate warping during use.
Prime the Airway buffing wheel with the appropriate compound before beginning each polishing stage. A buffing wheel rake can be used to help prime the wheel and remove excess compound buildup when necessary.
Work through each stage progressively, allowing the cutting, coloring, and finishing compounds to refine the aluminum surface step by step.
Pro Tips
Safety First: Metal polishing can create airborne particles. Use appropriate respiratory protection, gloves, and other recommended personal protective equipment when polishing.
Don't try to achieve the final shine in one step. The cutting stage establishes the finish, the coloring stage refines it, and the final polishing stage brings out the highest level of gloss.
